Free AI Chat With File Upload, No Account
How to upload a PDF, a photo, or a long paste to a free AI chat without an account, what happens to the file, and what the free tier won't do with it.
A free AI chat with file upload and no account lets you drop a PDF, a photo, or a long block of text onto the page and ask questions about it, without registering first. It works because the service extracts the text from your file, searches it when you ask something, and hands the matching parts to the model along with your question. You never see that step, you just get an answer that quotes your document.
Most people searching for this want one of three things: to ask questions about a PDF they can't be bothered to read, to get text out of a photo or scan, or to paste something longer than the message box allows. All three are the same feature underneath, and all three are available on a free chat without an account, with limits. This guide covers how it works, how to get a good answer out of it, and where the signed-out version stops.
How do you upload a file to a free AI chat?
Pick the file with the paperclip, drop it onto the chat, or paste it, then type your question and send. The file rides along with that message. On most chats the file isn't read until you send, and a question with no file attached gets an answer from the model's general knowledge instead.
The specifics on Carpathian's chat at https://carpathian.ai/chat, which takes files signed out:
- Formats. PDFs, plain text and Markdown files, and images (PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, GIF). A phone offers its photo library straight from the picker.
- Pastes. Paste more text than the message box takes and it becomes a file called "Pasted text" automatically. You don't have to save it first.
- Count. Up to four files or pictures per conversation signed out. The fifth asks you to make a free account.
- Processing. The file shows as processing while its text is pulled out. A scan or a photo of a page goes through text recognition. A large or scanned file takes longer, and the model can't answer from it until that finishes.
- Follow-ups. A PDF you sent three messages ago is still searched when you ask a follow-up. You don't have to re-attach it.
No account, no email, no card. The first send asks once to confirm you're 18 or older and agree to the terms, and that's the gate.
What happens to the file after you upload it?
The file's text is extracted, split into chunks, and indexed so the chat can search it. When you ask a question, the chunks that match are placed in front of the model with your question, and the model answers from them. The whole file is not read on every turn, only the parts that match.
That mechanism, called retrieval, is why some questions work better than others:
