Pick how you chat
The free models stay free with no message limit, only a short burst limit that keeps the chat responsive for everyone. A plan opens the larger models and more images, charged upfront each month with an allowance that refills when it renews.
General
For everyday use of the larger models

Additional usage
Run out before the plan renews and you can add tokens, or keep going on the free models. Added usage lasts until the plan renews. Tokens are counted on what a model writes back, scaled by the model, and what you send costs nothing.
API rates for chat models
Both figures are per million tokens, counted separately for what you send and what comes back. They apply when you call a model through the API. In the website chat the larger models come with a plan, and the free chat models carry no rate.
Image models
Billed per image, so a prompt that returns four pictures costs four. This is the one rate on the page that also applies in the browser, and generating anywhere needs a free account. An account includes 3 images every 7 days before anything is billed.
